Activity that serves as an adaptive function by providing stimulation or self-soothing.
Most cases cease spontaneously between 2 and 4 years of age.

When is it abnormal?
Thumb sucking after the age of four could be a sign of insecurity and discomfort.

What are the sides effects?
1. Dental malocclusion…open bite and overbite

2.  Serious skin problems on their preferred thumb. When exposed to the mouth’s moisture, the skin can become vulnerable to other injuries.

3. Speech Impediment
It can cause lisping and other speech impediments, including an inability to pronounce hard consonant sounds like “D” and “T.”

4. Social issues
Children who suck their thumbs in public may become the target of ridicule at the hands of their peers.

How to handle it correctly:
1. DO try to limit the time
Explain to them that this is a bed activity during nap time and at night.

2. Don’t turn it into a confrontation.
Try to recognize him and praise him when he’s not sucking his thumb instead of criticizing him when he is.

3. DO talk to your child about their thumb sucking or finger sucking.
Please help your child understand that when  they are  ready to stop, you will be there to help

4. Don’t prohibit your child if he tries to suck his thumb or fingers after being hurt or injured.

5.  DO practice self-awareness with your child.
Find another way to soothe them if they need it, like a blanket or stuffed animal.

6. Don’t use the nasty-tasting stuff that is marketed to stop thumb-sucking and finger-sucking.

7. DO come up with creative ways to help your child understand that they are growing up and one day won’t suck their thumb anymore.

8. DON’T try a glove or a mitten on the hand as a quick fix to thumb or finger sucking. “This will just frustrate them and cause more anxiety.

9. Do remember that a child will grow out of the need for thumb-sucking or finger-sucking when he’s good and ready.

“While parents may not like it, it’s best left alone,    Kids will eventually give it up.”
