Breast feeding and Lactation
In humans, the process of feeding milk is also called breastfeeding or nursing. Lactation refers to the formation of milk in breasts during the childbirth. In medical terms, at the delivery level of estrogen and progesterone fall, allowing the prolactin hormone to increase and initiate milk.
Why it is required for a baby?
Breast milk contains the entire nutrient that an infant needs. The first 6 months of life a child intake only breast milk. It is easily digested by the infant. It also contains bioactive factors that are essential for the immune system and provide protection against infections and environmental factors. Breast milk contains fat, carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals and water.
The first milk after the childbirth is called colostrums. It is yellowish in color. It produced in a very small amount and contains white cells and antibodies.
Common problems
Breastfeeding is not always easy for new mothers. They have a long list of confusions and queries about breastfeeding the newborn. There are a lot of things that the new moms need to understand and keep in mind regarding breastfeeding. A lot of things get changed with a mother after the birth of the newborn. The mother faced some common problems like Cracked nipples, pumping improperly, latching problem, during the breastfeeding you may have bloody discharge, sore breast, low milk supply, engorgement, leaking breast, etc.
Preventions
Many mothers have breastfeeding problems during their child’s birth. But it can be solved easily. You can contact the Lactation consultant or Pediatrics. Allow your baby to breastfeed as much as they desire to prevent engorgement. If milk supply is low you can try nutritional supplements to boost your milk supply. For leaking breast, you can use disposable nursing pads. Do not take a contraceptive pill or mini-pills for birth control.
