HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR NEWBORN UMBILICAL CORD?
During pregnancy, the umbilical cord supplies nutrients and oxygen to your developing baby.
After birth, the umbilical cord is no longer needed — so it’s clamped and snipped. This leaves behind a short stump.
Care of Umbilical cord
Newborn’s umbilical cord stump typically falls off within about two weeks after birth. In the meantime, treat your baby’s umbilical cord stump gently.
- Keep the cord clean and dry at all times.
- Skip the tub and sink and give your baby sponge baths or quick bath instead.
- Allow the cord to heal naturally. Avoid pulling the cord even if it is very slightly attached.
- When your baby has a super-messy bowel movement, some stool may get on the cord. If that happens, clean it gently with soap and water.
- While putting diapers on your baby, fold them so that they rest below the cord. That’ll shield it from your little one’s pee.
