KANGAROO MOTHER CARE IN NEWBORNS

Kangaroo mother care (KMC) refers to the practice of providing continuous skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby, exclusive breastmilk feeding, and early discharge from hospital.  It has a dramatic positive effects on preemies and newborn babies.

Some benefits of KANGAROO CARE are:
  • It Helps Baby Adapt.
  • It Boosts Baby’s Mental Development.
  • It Promotes Healthy Weight.
  • It Makes Breastfeeding Easier.
  • It Encourages Healthy Heart Rate and Respiration.
  • It Improves Immunity.
  • It Increases Milk Supply.
  • It Reduces Baby’s Stress and Pain.

Skin-to-Skin is encouraged immediately after birth, throughout the hospital stay, and well after discharge. Families are encouraged to practice Skin-to-Skin for an uninterrupted 60 minutes during the first 12 weeks and beyond.

KMC stabilizes heart and respiratory rates, improves oxygen saturation rates, better regulates an infant’s body temperature, and conserves a baby’s calories.

NICU team at Mayom Hospital Gurugram, under guidance of Dr Deepa Aggarwal, regularly practice KANGAROO CARE for all their preemies resulting in lesser complications and early discharge.
