I often get this request from new parents on every vaccination visit to give only PAINLESS vaccine to their little one. I wonder if they actually know what is painless vaccine and if this term applies to all the vaccines given to children these days!

WHAT IS PAINLESS VACCINE?

• In simple terms there are no painless vaccines and all are given through syringe as injection.
• Only vaccine that is subject to this confusion is DTP VS DTaP given at 6,10 and 14 weeks and boosters later.
• DTaP is acellular vaccine which is supposed to have lesser incidence of fever,pain at injection site and irritability as compared to whole cell DTP vaccine and hence the ‘painless vaccine ‘ concept.
• Hopefully parents realize the fact that there was never a painless vaccine and probably never going to be a ‘painless vaccine ‘.Only oral vaccines like OPV and rotavirus can be painless.
